Janet Marshall, later called ‘Jane’, was born to Charles and Elizabeth Cox Marshall in August 1761 in New Providence, Bahamas.  She was quite young when her father died.  Her mother moved the family to New York City where she was remarried to John Ramsay, a merchant of the city.  She and her older sister, Margaret, were soon joined by six more Ramsay siblings.  When young, Jane split her time between Manhattan, Philadelphia, and Elizabeth Town, New Jersey.  In the 1780s, she was married to John Rucker, a German immigrant and wealthy merchant of the firm Constable & Rucker Company.  She had only one son, John, before her husband died.  In 1791 she married again, this time to Alexander Macomb, another merchant and also a sometime business partner of Constable.  She had seven more children.  After her husband gave up or lost his business concerns in New York City, the couple moved to Georgetown, D.C. where they could be near Alexander’s son and namesake.
